The Founder of Parks Foundation
Terry is remembered as the founding father and past chairman whose vision and dedication continue to shape Calgary’s outdoor landscape for generations. He loved the outdoors and believed that everyone should have meaningful access to parks near their homes. His legacy is honoured today through the Terry Hawitt Vista.
In 1984, high-rises and parking lots were rapidly replaced natural spaces. Terry recognized green spaces needed to be preserved, especially in downtown Calgary. Terry began by reaching out to friends, local officials, and community leaders, and successfully raised funds for its first major project – the urban park now known as Harmony Park.
Terry loved the outdoors and believed that everyone should have meaningful access to parks near their homes. His legacy is honoured today through memorials such as the Terry Hawitt Vista. He is remembered as the founding father and past chairman whose vision and dedication continue to shape Calgary’s outdoor landscape for generations.
Today, Parks Foundation projects continue to demonstrate the power of community-driven fundraising and philanthropy — with over $250 million invested into capital projects and hundreds of community-led park and sports initiatives supported over the years.
