Haultain Park Revitalization
Honouring The Park’s Historic Significance
Once home to two Haultain Schools, Haultain Park has long played an important role in Calgary’s early education history. The original 1894 South Ward School -Calgary’s first sandstone school and the first with electricity and running water -still stands today and now serves as the office of Parks Foundation Calgary.
Today, Haultain Park is one of the few nearby green spaces in the Beltline community where residents can enjoy a moment in the sun, connect with neighbours, and watch children play. Yet, much of its rich history remains largely unknown.
Recognizing both its heritage and the needs of a growing, diverse inner-city community, Parks Foundation and our partners are transforming Haultain Park into a multi‑use space that honours its past while serving today’s residents.

Park Features
The revitalization of Haultain Park will enhance accessibility and promote movement and connection to nature for people of all ages, while celebrating Calgary’s history and strengthening its role as a welcoming community hub in the Beltline.
The project will add new gathering spaces and expanded greenery to keep the park an engaging destination and support urban biodiversity. Upgraded amenities, improved green spaces, and additional tree planting will create a more inviting environment, provide much‑needed shade, and contribute to Calgary’s tree canopy for greater comfort year‑round.

HERITAGE & STORYTELLING
Honours its rich past by weaving historical interpretation and design into the space. Custom signage and elements will celebrate the legacy of the original South Ward/Haultain School, helping visitors connect with the site’s role in Calgary’s early community life while preserving this cultural landmark.
COMMUNITY GATHERING & SOCIAL ACTIVATION
Redesigned to support everyday use and social connection, with new gathering areas, benches, and welcoming entrance features. Spaces like the proposed porch swing pergola create opportunities for relaxation and neighbourhood interaction.
BIODIVERSITY & GREEN SPACE ENHANCEMENT
Expanded greenery and enhanced tree planting will improve shade, comfort, and biodiversity in Beltline, contributing to environmental health and urban canopy. Landscape improvements also support sightlines and safety, making the park more inviting year-round for neighbours and visitors alike.
