Why This Event Matters
20,000 Calgarians are living with dementia right now. By 2030, the number is expected to reach 34,000. Despite the large number of Calgarians impacted both directly and indirectly, there are no public outdoor spaces designed to meet the unique needs of those living with dementia as well as those who love them.
That’s why Martin Family Legacy Garden’s design has been informed by extensive dementia research. Features of the park, such as sensory gardens, wayfinding signage, colourful pathways, and shaded areas were carefully chosen and implemented to create a healing sanctuary. Here, individuals with dementia as well as their caregivers and families can experience the therapeutic benefits of nature together.
